Srebrenica genocide, refers to the July 1995 killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, as well as the ethnic cleansing of another 25,000–30,000 refugees, in and around the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, by units of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladić during the Bosnian War. A paramilitary unit from Serbia known as the Scorpions, officially part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, participated in the massacre. It is alleged that foreign volunteers including the Greek Volunteer Guard also participated.

THE SREBRENICA VISIT

The tour starts from Sarajevo, its beauty, stories and its breathtaking natural surroundings.

Upon our arrival to Srebrenica, the professional guide will walk you through the city. You will learn about how Srebrenica sadly entered the history with the biggest genocide in Europe after the World War II.

In July 1995, General Ratko Mladić and his Serbian paramilitary units overran and captured the town, despite its designation as an area “free from any armed attack or any other hostile act”.

In the days following Srebrenica’s fall, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically massacred and buried in mass graves. Thousands of women, children and elderly people were forcibly deported and a large number of women were raped. It was the greatest atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) ruled that the mass execution of Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica constituted genocide.

Judge Fouad Riad, who reviewed the indictment, described the “unimaginable savagery” that the victims endured at the hands of the Mladic’s forces. He said these were: “truly scenes from hell, written on the darkest pages of human history.”

Also you will visit the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Complex which was grounded in May 2001 in memory of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. In 2003 it was openned for the public by Bill Clinton. Unfortunately, twenty years after the massacre, bodies are still being recovered from mass grave sites.

We will visit the “memorial “, a specially designed museum in Potočari. You will have an opportunity to watch a short movie and see the personal items of the victims found in the mass graves such as: lighters, tobacco boxes, keys, photo albums and other personal items approach us the fate of men and boys in July 1995.

In your visit to Srebrenica, you will be shocked, sad, horrified but also learn about the genocide and life in Srebrenica.
