Over the past days, I had the privilege of guiding a wonderful international group through some of the most meaningful, beautiful, and historically important places in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The journey combined history, culture, nature, spirituality, local food, and authentic experiences that allowed the group to truly feel the spirit of the country.
Our adventure began in Sarajevo, where the guests were welcomed and introduced to the complex history and multicultural identity of Bosnia & Herzegovina. During their stay in Sarajevo, we explored the old Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian parts of the city, visited important historical landmarks, and experienced the unique atmosphere that makes Sarajevo so special.
One of the most emotional and educational experiences was the visit to the Tunnel of Hope Museum. Through the tunnel tour, the group learned about the Siege of Sarajevo, the resilience of the people during the war, and the importance of the tunnel in connecting the city to the outside world during the 1990s.
The group also experienced Sarajevo from a different perspective through a hike on Mount Trebević. Despite challenging weather conditions, rain, and muddy trails, the participants showed incredible determination and positive spirit. Some even managed to reach the peak, where they were rewarded with beautiful views over Sarajevo and the surrounding mountains.
After Sarajevo, we continued towards Herzegovina using one of the most scenic train routes in the Balkans. The train journey from Sarajevo to Mostar offered unforgettable views of the Jablanica canyon and the emerald-green Neretva River. Guests were advised to sit on the left side of the train to fully enjoy the spectacular scenery along the route.
Upon arrival in Mostar, we continued directly towards Blagaj, one of the hidden gems of Herzegovina. There, the group enjoyed breakfast by the Buna River and visited the famous Dervish Tekke, located beneath dramatic cliffs at the source of the Buna spring. The peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty left a strong impression on everyone.
The journey continued to Kravica Waterfalls, one of the most famous natural attractions in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Despite the many stairs leading down to the waterfalls, the guests enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, fresh air, and relaxing atmosphere around the turquoise water.
After Kravica, we explored the medieval stone town of Počitelj, where the group walked through narrow cobblestone streets, climbed historic towers, and learned more about Ottoman and medieval Bosnian history.
In the evening, the group discovered the beauty of Mostar through a guided city tour led by local guide Mirna. Together we explored the Old Town, learned about the symbolism and history of the Old Bridge, and discussed the multicultural identity and post-war recovery of the city.
The following day, we departed from Mostar and stopped in Jablanica for a peaceful boat experience on Jablanica Lake. Surrounded by mountains and untouched nature, the guests enjoyed homemade juice, fresh fruit, and the calm atmosphere of the lake.
After the boat ride, the group had the opportunity to try one of Herzegovina’s most famous specialties — traditional lamb on a spit from Jablanica. Sharing local food together became another important cultural experience during the journey.
Throughout the tour, the focus was not only on sightseeing, but also on creating meaningful connections with the country, its people, and its stories. The guests experienced Bosnia & Herzegovina through its landscapes, food, spirituality, hospitality, and historical memory.
As a guide, it was a pleasure to accompany the group throughout this journey and help them discover the many layers of Bosnia & Herzegovina — from Ottoman heritage and wartime history to mountain landscapes and Herzegovinian hospitality.
